From October 14th to October 18th, 2024, Prof. Siepe, Head of the Spine Center of Schön Klinik München Harlaching, Germany, and the Secretary General of EUROSPINE, visited the Minimally Invasive Spine Surgery (MISS) Department of the Orthopedics Hospital of Guangdong Provincial Hospital of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), and carried out a one-week visiting professor activity with Vice President CHEN Bolai of the Orthopedics Hospital and his team.As a world-class endoscopic spine surgery expert, Prof. Siepe performs over 300 spine surgeries annually, and is active in spine surgery academic conferences all over the world.The MISS Department of the Orthopedics Hospital of Guangdong Provincial Hospital of TCM is one of the first in China to develop endoscopic cervical and lumbar spine fusion surgeries.They also make use of advanced technologies, such as surgical robots and intraoperative navigation, to assist challenging spine surgeries.This exchange covered cutting-edge techniques, clinical diagnosis and treatment, and surgical experience of spine surgery, laying foundation for in-depth cooperation in spine surgery between China and Germany.During the week, Prof. Siepe observed several surgeries of the MISS Department of Guangdong Provincial Hospital of TCM, and thought highly of the lumbar anaesthesia which is used in lumbar decompression surgeries.He considered that this can effectively shorten the recovery time and improve the efficiency of surgeries, and would like to bring this concept back to Germany and try it in his department.In the following surgery observations, Prof. Siepe also spoke highly of the precise surgical techniques of Director SU Guoyi of the MISS Department, and had thorough discussions on the innovative intraoperative techniques with him.Meanwhile, Prof. Siepe gave several lectures with a large number of cases, intraoperative images and videos, further introducing anterior spine surgery, endoscopic techniques, and how to deal with challenges in surgeries by pre-op planning and precise operations.Prof. Siepe had a comprehensive academic exchanges with the Chinese colleagues, further promoting the mutual development of Sino-German spine surgery.This exchange activity not only brought new breakthroughs in surgical skills and concepts to the MISS Department of the hospital, but also inspired new ideas for Prof. Siepe.At the end of the academic salon on October 18th, Prof. Siepe said that although this was his third visit to Guangdong Provincial Hospital of TCM, it was particularly rewarding this time.With this exchange activity, Sino-German cooperation in spine surgery field will become closer, laying a solid foundation for further technical cooperation and talent training in the future.
