On November 29, 2021, at 10:00 pm, we had a 2-hour internal meeting, with Prof. Stief, the Deputy Medical Director of University Hospital of Munich, to discuss 13 important questions. He was raised in a family of medical doctors, with his grand-grandfather had already been a doctor. His uncle has been the most influential gynecologist in Germany around 40 years ago. He influenced Prof. Stief the most throughout his career. Prof. Stief describes his position of Deputy Medical Director as a role to devote to the common benefit of the hospital, to help all employees or departments to solve their problems. In the upcoming years, he will try anything to keep the internationally leading position of the University Hospital of Munich, and to provide the patients with best possible care. He is the first and only urologist among the fellows of German National Academy of Sciences Leopoldina. The Leopoldina provides policymakers with science-based advice. Founded in 1652, the Leopoldina is the oldest existing academy of sciences worldwide. Over the last 371 years, there have been 7961 fellows from more than 30 countries. Among them, more than 170 Nobel Prize laureates are counted. The member list also includes Madame Curie, Charles Darwin, Albert Einstein, and so on. To Prof. Stief, as a medical doctor, it is of paramount importance to visit different countries, different hospitals and different universities for fellowship or MD degree. This broadens one’s horizons and builds up global thinking, making one a better doctor and a better person. Only international meetings gather top doctors all over the world, where you can discuss the hospital management, specialty construction and talent cultivation, which helps a hospital to plan a big picture for its development in patient care and in research, even the ambition to be internationally leading. Prof. Stief will take a direct flight from Munich to Shanghai on Sept. 13. And he will arrive in Xiamen at noon on Sept 16, and will have face-to-face exchanges with Chinese hospital presidents, key academic leaders in different specialties, heads of administrative departments and outstanding young doctors.
