My father’s work started from the secret code named “Mailbox 401”. When the New China was founded, the nation proposed the goal of building the Four Modernizations. My father told me in 1987 that our country would achieve the four modernizations, which means having upstairs, downstairs, electric lights, and telephones - the convenience of modern living. In the coldest winter of 1939, when the country was in grave danger and covered in deep darkness, my father headed north alone from Chongqing to join the troops of Fu Zuoyi, a famous anti-Japanese general. My father participated in the War of Resistance Against Japanese Aggression, the most tragic war in the history of the Chinese nation. Every operation they carried out might have been the last in his life. Every time they went to battle, they held the determination to die.  Back then, more than 20 Japanese soldiers were chasing him. He fled in an old temple and hid on the main beam. The Japanese soldiers rushed in and destroyed the entire temple. They wanted to kill him. He faced more than 20 gun barrels all by himself. In 1948, my father participated in the Pingjin Campaign. Their troops peacefully liberated Beiping. Two million people and one million soldiers in the ancient city of Beiping were reborn in peace. He had a firm belief that no matter whether the country would become better in the future or not, no matter whether he could see it himself or not, at least his child would definitely be able to witness the change. When I was a school kid, I saw that all my classmates’ fathers were in their twenties, while my own father was already over sixty, I felt sad about the gap. He promised me to take photos together, but he past away before fulfilling it. Tonight, there is a bright and graceful moon, and such a beautiful reunion. I grew up in the most beautiful place in the world, yet in my eyes there has always been only you. A blizzard is coming and we shall all move silently through the deepest abyss. The meaning of life is not in merely living, but in how one lives. Even if the future no longer has my father in it, even if their names will one day be forgotten by the people, their sacrifices in those years will never be meaningless. It is precisely because of thousands and thousands of great pioneers like my father that we have today’s New China, a nation of liberty, equality, democracy and peace. I now have the best career in the world, which allows me to share with thousands of people around the world. The most formidable and fearless part of China is that even when standing on the edge of survival, it dared to take the last grain of rice and plant it as a seed for a better future. How I hope that the doctors of New China can be a group of people in our society who have morality, faith, ideals, and ability. We, of our generation, should strive to rise and forge ourselves in strength.  Our predecessors, with wholehearted dedication, cut through thorns and barriers, fought for the last glimmer of hope for the nation. They have no resource, no fame, no influence, no status, merely a heart full of passion. I also love those farmers who walk on yellow earth. Their life was extremely difficult, but they were honest, kind, thrifty. Even when they themselves were hungry, they would offered their food, their money, and even their children to the country. How fortunate are we to have seen the new China, in which even the countryside has become as beautiful as a garden. We should be grateful for the heroic devotion of our great predecessors. We shall remember them forever, from generation to generation. We should love our beloved motherland even more deeply. Each and every one of us, yes, every one, must remember for all eternity: Every inch of the land beneath our feet is soaked with the blood of our predecessors. Therefore, when the rise and fall of the nation is at stake, every citizen bears responsibility.
