Prof. Mayer, a world-class master in minimally invasive spine surgery, has an extraordinary talent in medicine. In 1998, he moved from Berlin to Munich to take over Schoen Klinik Muenchen Harlaching, and turned the hospital from the edge to bankruptcy to a nationally even worldwide well-known orthopedic hospital. In 2006, he founded the German Spine Society (DWG). And in 2007, Schoen Klinik Muenchen Harlaching was certified as a FIFA Medical Center of Excellence. During these 22 years, Prof. Mayer led spine surgery team to become one of the best known Spine Surgery Departments in Germany and the world. Prof. Mehren, an outstanding expert cultivated by Prof. Mayer, now works as the Deputy Medical Director of Schoen Klinik Muenchen Harlaching, and the Director of the Spine Center and the Back Institute Munich. From March 11 to March 17, Prof. Mehren visited Zhengzhou Orthopedics Hospital as an international visiting professor. The Spine and Spinal Cord Clinic of Zhengzhou Orthopedics Hospital, where Prof. Mehren visited this time, is led by Secretary MEI Wei, a spine surgery expert, and has been developed to a key specialty and the diagnostic and treatment center for spine and spinal cord diseases with integrated Chinese and Western medicine of Henan Province. During his one-week visit, Prof. Mehren and the spine surgery team participated in a series academic exchange activities, including outpatient consultation, ward rounds, surgical guidance, surgical practice, key and complex cases discussion, and master's public lectures. Since Prof. Mehren has rich experience in microscopic spine surgeries and total disc replacement (TDR) of the cervical spine, the hospital specially invited him to share his deep insights in microscopic spine surgeries and TDR on the Microscopic Spinal Surgery Technique Training Course. What's more, Prof. Mehren also shared his experience in department construction as the Deputy Medical Director of his hospital. He said, a good communication in the team and patient-oriented concept are two essential factors to improve medical quality and promote department construction and hospital development. After his visit, Prof. Mehren was surprised by the development of endoscopic techniques of the spine surgery team of Zhengzhou Orthopedics Hospital, and was moved by the team's passion and responsibility on their medical work. Apart from work, Prof. Mehren also got to know the history and culture of Zhengzhou City and tried lots of local food. And he looks forward to visiting China again.
