At 8:30 this morning, we went to a hospital to meet its vice president. He has been to America, and he thought he could take advantage of us by being condescending and diminishing us. I’ve met so many people like him in hospitals in China. They’re all bureaucratic. They are incompetent and only have a feeble network with their peers in America. However, he dared to treat us like we were inferior to him. The truth is that he has nothing we could ask for. In March this month, we have 15 big contracts pending to be signed with other hospitals. Why would I deprecate myself to ask someone contemptible to cooperate with me? He is nothing to me. I came to this hospital personally only because its president is an upright person who is desperate to improve the hospital and we are deeply touched by his aspiration. At the end of our visit, I told this vice president directly, “Do you know that all the American hospitals and research institutions are not as good as you think they are? In America, the treatment for tumors costs 17 folds than that in China. Hospitals in America are the production of the gainful network woven by the large insurance companies, the large pharmaceutical enterprises, and the large medical equipment manufacturers forcing American doctors to join them. The medical system in America only serves the wealthy, but in China, the system serves everyone. You want to cooperate with renowned world-class hospitals and research institutions, but why would they agree to do so? Do they have any given reason to cooperate with you? Do you have anything worthy for them to do so? You have nothing valuable at all, how dare you be so condescending? How could you be so arrogant?” If the leaders with limited ability in the Grade Three Class A hospitals in China don’t change their thoughts and perceptions, there is no way that hospitals in China can develop and become better. This kind of person only cares about how many articles they’ve published, how many projects they can apply for the National Natural Science Foundation of China, and how many things they can boast of. They never think about what they can offer to the patients in China, let alone consider themselves as the reflection of the conscience of the country. We have abundant doctors, and what we lack are doctors with morality. What is urgent need for improvement in Chinese hospitals is the quality and morality of doctors.
